6 Laal Paar Sarees to Add to Your Saree List

6 Laal Paar Sarees to Add to Your Saree List

A couple of years ago, I waited on my mother as she tried wrapping her Garad saree. Yes, it was Durga Pujo time and my mother had just bought herself a Laal Paar Garad saree. “Why don’t you give it up? It will be crumpled anyways…,” I claimed exasperated.

It is a tough saree to drape what with the silk having a tissue-like texture but the mothership managed as always. “Watch me,” was the challenge my mother issued and wore the fabric with elan!

For the uninitiated, the Garad or the Garod saree is a silk saree from Murshidabad, West Bengal. Its very name ‘Garad’ means white and this type of white silk saree gets its colour due to the fact that when manufactured on Mulberry or Tusshar silk, the saree is not dyed and retains its natural colour.

Due to its almost pure, organic nature, this Laal Paar Garad saree is considered to be very auspicious as white stands for purity and red stands fertility. Therefore, these sarees are often worn for religious ceremonies and no fall is stitched on them to maintain their sanctity.

There is a certain charm and beauty about a white and red combination saree. It is simple to look at but speaks volumes. It is plain but powerful. No wonder Bengali married women wear this saree for Sindoor Khela on Dussehra. Over the years, this red and white colour combination has made its appearance through many sarees, evolving beyond the Garad.

So, let’s look at some really beautiful red and white combination sarees:
