Wedding Trends Started By Bollywood That Became Mainstream #NoSurpriseHere

We might laugh at the unrealistic standards set by Bollywood, but secretly all of us want a Yash Raj or a Karan Johar wedding. Did you know that some of the wedding functions have received their share of glam and popularity all due to Bollywood? We have jotted down a few for you!

1. A War Between the Bride’s Family and the Groom’s Family, the Joota Churai

Suraj Barjatya is the king of family romance! His movie Hum Aapke Hai Kaun is a unique love story between Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit. This movie highlighted the idea of ‘joota churai’ where the bride’s sister steals the groom’s shoes and demands money in exchange. The famous song ‘Joote Dedo, Paise Lelo’ is filmed on the same concept.

2. Sangeet- An Evening Full of Fun and Frolic

Now a days, a sangeet function is a must at every wedding. The idea of the entire family dancing in a synchronized manner was also a part of the movie Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. They introduce the new bride to all the family members via the song ‘Sunoji Dhulan.’ Classic Barjatya!

3. Mehndi Function- Dance, Drama & Dhol!

Every senorita’s dream love story, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, has a lot more to show than Europe and Punjab ke sarso ke khet. It has made the mehndi function as one of the mainstream functions at weddings. The song ‘Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna’ still attracts the crowds towards the dance floor.

4. All The Hype Around Karva Chauth

A lot of movies have glamorized Karva Chauth, but no one beats Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham at it. It is full of over the top lehengas, jewellery and of course song and dance. Makes us wonder how they get the energy to dance after fasting for an entire day? Karan Johar has single handedly managed to make a huge celebration out of a small festival!

5. From A to Z, the Wedding Planning

Indian weddings were usually planned by the elders of the family. In came Band Baaja Baaraat and took away all their tension by introducing wedding planners. Since the inception of this movie, the concept of hiring professionals for planning a wedding has become very popular.

6. Dreamy Destinations for Weddings

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani showed us a grand wedding that took place against the beautiful backdrop of the Udaipur Lake. The number of destination weddings (especially in Udaipur) has increased ever since.

7. The Last Trip of Your Singlehood, the Bachelor Trip!

Everybody is familiar with bachelor parties but very few gelled well with the idea of a bachelor trip before Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara showcased it. Take the title seriously and go live your dream of a bachelor trip!

8. Onset of Simple Yet Beautiful Weddings

Bollywood is full of big, fat, grand weddings. However, English Vinglish shows a simple Marathi wedding in the heart of New York. Such an amazing way to flaunt our colourful culture!  Also, don’t miss out the gorgeous Banarasi sarees worn by Sridevi for the wedding functions.

9. Ditching The Mainstream Decor

Bright colours like fuchsia pink, orange and yellow characterize every wedding. However, the movie Love Breakups Zindagi brought pastel shades decor  into the picture. Although this concept is at a nascent stage, many people are catching up on it.

10. The Simple & Fun Haldi Evening At Home

Kangna Ranaut’s Queen is loved by all the age groups. The song ‘London Thumakda’ shows how a pre-wedding function like haldi / mehndi can be enjoyed in the comfort of your house in the company of your loved ones, leaving behind all the fancy venues! Needless to say the floral jewellery that Kangna wore added to the simplicity of it all.
