Jaipur - The Pink City, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Rajasthan and there are many things on offer by this beautiful city for its visitors.
DAY 1 & 2
DAY 1:
We start our day by visiting the Amber Fort.
Amber Fort which is also pronounced as Amer, in Jaipur was the chief bastion of the Kachchawa clan of Rajasthan. This massive fort-palace complex was built in 1600's and was the royal residence of the Kachchawa kings between 1600 - 1727. Its architecture is a mix of Hindu-Muslim style. The name of the fort is derived from the town Amber which in turn was named after the Hindu goddess Amba.
The fort that is located at a high elevation needs you to hike up or take an elephant ride which is one interesting thing to do. In the fort complex you will not find too many signage's therefore it is advised to hire a guide or you can do a thorough study on Amber Fort before you go for the tour.
The main attraction is the 'Sheesh Mahal' adorned with thousands of mirror tiles on the walls and ceiling. If you are an avid history lover then you should go to this place evening as you can also take part in the 'light and sound' show that takes place everyday in the evening between 19:00 - 20:00 where you can get a narration of the history of the Fort and the Kings of Rajasthan.
On the way back to the main city you can also visit Jal Mahal which is a fascinating palace in the middle of the lake. Although you cannot explore the palace itself as the lower levels are submerged under water. It still makes for a fascinating view.Do keep a look out for this while on the road to Amer!
City Palace is one of the most prominent structures in the city of Jaipur. Originally built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur, it is a mix of traditional Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. This beautiful palace complex occupies the one seventh area of the entire city.
The palace complex is divided into a series of buildings, courtyards and gardens, and it also houses other palatial structures like Mubarak Mahal which now converted into a textile museum, Chandra Mahal which is the official home to the present Maharaj of Jaipur, the Diwan-E-Khas and the Diwan-E-Aam where the ruler used to address his ministers and the general public in the olden days etc. Other popular structures within the complex include Chhavi Nivas, Mukut Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the gateway Ridhi-Sidhi Pol with four small doorways decorated with motifs that depict the four seasons.
The biggest attraction is the famous Hawa Mahal that stands out in the entire complex. This beautiful attraction adds to the royal heritage of the city and was built by Maharaja Sawai Singh in 1799 as a part of the famous City Palace. The structure is a five storey high red sandstone complex with over 950 windows. The palace was built with the intention that the women of the royal family could have a glimpse of the outside world while staying safe behind the latticed windows and maintaining 'purdah' which is an ancient tradition whereby women were not allowed to mingle with men not part of their family, without a veil.
For a shopaholic a visit to the famous Johari Bazar is a must. Located in the heart of the city this famous bazar showcases true Rajasthani taste.
